The full, proper title of the story is “A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost-Story of Christmas”.
What a mouthful!
Dickens enjoyed performing A Christmas Carol at live readings. In 1852 he gave his first performance, and 127 further times until his final performance in 1870 (the year of his death).
A Christmas Carol credited with popularising the phrase ‘Merry Christmas’. Although it had been around long before, it was not in the common vernacular until after the success of this novella with the Victorian public.
