Christmas Hat
Christmas Hat is a great children’s story written by
AJ Wood and illustrated by Maggie Kneen. The story is about
Little Owl who as a baby was lost in the woods and was adopted
by Rabbit and Badger. The two, with the aid of their woodland
friends, took care of Little Owl, and taking care of this
little bird was a considerable challenge. The mischievous
young bird constantly plays in the mud and unravels the woven
blanket, among other tricks.

Little Owl’s white winter plumage perfectly blends
with the snow white landscape and he keeps on doing things
that get him into trouble. Rabbit knits Little Owl a special
bright red Christmas hat so that their woodland animal friends
can always find the bird in the woods and see what he is up
to, but Fox can also do so. This puts Little Owl in greater
trouble.
The rich details and warm embossed textures of the illustrations
of the picture book are perfectly appealing to young children.
The winter story is easy to understand and fun to read during
the Christmas season. Christmas Hat is a delight to the children,
a great gift to give to them and a great story for them to
share with their friends. The visual quality is a great treat,
and so is the happy ending.

The vicious fox heightens the thrill and adds contrast
to the playful baby owl wearing a red Christmas hat. The
entire story and illustrations show the greatness of the
author who has been writing children’s books for the
last twenty years and the illustrator who has illustrated
many great children’s books.
The 32 page Christmas Hat was published by Dutton Juvenile
on September 15, 2005 and Penguin Books in 2004. Great books
like this are not only meant to be enjoyed; they are meant
to be kept and treasured in the heart. The fact that innocent
hearts remember the story only makes it more special.
