    British-American English Dictionary

    American words:

    1. bathroom

    2. yard

    3. hard candy

    4. cookies

    5. counterclockwise

    6. tractor-trailer

    7. babysitter

    8. jalopy

    9. efficiency apartment (studio apartment)

    10. hood (that covers the engine)

    11. cotton candy

    12. stuffed animal

    13. Band-Aid

    14. soft drink or pop

    15. parking lot

    16. carryout

    17. Q-Tip(cotton swab)

    Can someone provide the British words?

    I have had to ask my husband for some of these

    1. bathroom - Toilet / rest room

    2. yard - Garden

    3. hard candy - Boiled sweets

    4. cookies - Biscuits

    5. counterclockwise - Anti-clockwise

    6. tractor-trailer - Lorry with trailer (Articulated) (I had no clue about this - I thought it was a tractor with a trailer! )



    7. babysitter - babysitter

    8. jalopy - Again, had no clue - had to ask hubby. Old, tired out car according to him...

    9. efficiency apartment (studio apartment) - Bedsit / Flat

    10. hood (that covers the engine) - Bonnet

    11. cotton candy - Candy Floss

    12. stuffed animal - Teddy Bear

    13. Band-Aid - Plaster

    14. soft drink or pop - Fizzy Drink

    15. parking lot - Car Park

    16. carryout - Takeaway (I had no idea!)

    17. Q-Tip(cotton swab) - Cotton Buds

    Big thank you's to my husband for helping with this... I felt like a child asking for homework help LOL

    LOL. Many Americans just say semi. My husband usually calls them tractor-trailers.

    I thought you had another word for babysitter.

    Can you think of some words I missed?

    Bedsit sounds really strange to me, but it's nice to know.

    It depends if you mean the same thing by babysitter as we do. Do you mean somebody casually looking after your kids sometimes? If you mean somebody who officially works in childcare and who is paid to look after your children while you're at work, that would be a childminder.

    Christmas Mama - babysitter is usually more of a casual situation here as well. A person who watches your children while you work is now often called a child-care provider.
