Christmas lights question

So for my first thread on here... I have a question about Christmas lights. I want to swap out the regular bulbs for LED bulbs, but the places I have looked at so far sell them for outrageous prices... I noticed that most of them are 5mm LEDs, so my question is, can I buy 5mm LEDs and wire them in myself? And would I need resistors?
