We had a VERY mild winter last year, but a VERY HEAVY winter the year before. I never know what to expect. We are as ready as we need to be. Although, I haven't raked leaves yet. They are only now beginning to fall. I need to rake/bag the leaves. I need to store my grill and my hose reel. I also need to cover up the A/C unit and turn off the water to the outdoor spigot. I still have a good 6 weeks to do all that though. Oh, and I will most likely be putting clear plastic window seals on as well.
    I love Outdoor Christmas Lights!!

If I lose my power, the birdies will freeze to death but I'll have to be rescued by one of the children.

Just searching for winter weather forecast UK 2012/13 and this came up...

It may be wrong, it probably will be wrong, but it's always worth being ready.

It's that time of year again... A good thing that I checked the batteries in my camping lantern as they expired. the light was far dimmer than it should be, and when I opened it to replace the batteries I found that they had started to leak. A quick wipe with a cloth on the contacts and a new set of batteries installed and all was well once more.

Some of you know the hard way what autumn and winter can bring. Here's hoping that you don't forget to be ready, and that your preperations aren't needed. We live in hope, but nevertheless make ready for what may happen...

my weather hackles tell me that autumn/fall is coming early this year, but winter wil be later, but colder than we expect.

I love autumn - the colors, the crisp air, the autumn holidays! Except for last 2 years (Hurricane Sandy & a big snowstorm)) it is usually the best time, weatherwise, here in the northeastern US. Winters can be devastatingly hard here and the snow sometimes starts as early as October. Two years ago, we had a blizzard with almost 18 inches of snow on October 30th - it totally ruined Halloween for all the children. After these two events, we are always prepared early for the worst - plenty of batteries, firewood, candles and food. Last year, after the Hurricane, we lost power for 6 full days. After the blizzard in 2011, we lost power for 3 days and after Hurricane Irene in August 2011, we lost power for 4 days.

I spend a lot of time raking mountains of leaves in the fall and hoping for light snowfall during the winter months!

    It does make life interesting!
