Well, my parents have one thing that is my favorite ornament. It isn't particularaly nice to look at, but it is a reminder of a wonderful neighbor we used to have. It is a chestnut with a screw in it and some white kitchen string tied around the screw so it can hang on the tree. This neighbor was always joking around. One year he went to the grocery store and bought a bunch of chestnuts. He then realized he didn't know how to cook them. Instead of throwing them out (or looking in a cook book), he put small piles at people's front doors, and a sign that read "reindeer droppings". That is one of my favorite Christmas memories, and looking at that rotten old chestnut reminds me of it. I'm also willing to bet it's the only chestnut reindeer dropping in the world.
On a side note, that same fellow owns a Santa suit, and he would go to strangers houses, and give out candy and oranges, and joke around about who had been bad or good. I'm sure they all assumed it was a friend or relative, and I can just imagine how puzzled they were when months later they still couldn't figure out who it was.
That is an amazing story! I love it. Christmas(for me) is all about traditions and giving to others. Your neighbour totally got the concept I think.
When I was a kid about 5 or 6 we went to my mom's friends house and see had a pretty tree but had cob webs all over it. I couldn't understand that because her house was always nice and clean. I had never seen angel hair before then and my mom thought it was so funny.
Hmmm.. I guess another funny thing on my tree is my little bird, sleeping on it!!
