When I was growing up in Germany we always had real wax candles (as in open flame) on our tree. Yes it was dangerous, yes you could only light the candles when you were standing in front of the tree but it was the most luminous glowing and christmas spirit inspiring light you can imagine.
PS:thankfully nothing ever burned!

I have read where they had to have a bucket of water handy, just in case. No sleeping with real candles as lights on the tree.

I bet that was cute now they have battery operated ones that would look just as pretty. I don't mix my candles or my tree. :tree:
I bet it was breath taking, I want to do that just once. I would love to light them on Christmas eve to welcome the birth. My daughter lived in germany for 3 1/2 years and she said the Christmas Eve the bells would ring through the valley and people would come out of their homes to welcome Christ birth. This was in Schweinfurt Germany, she misses it and so does my grandson, the real greenery that could be bought in the lil shops for such a great price and the hot Gluwein, wow , it's time to go back.
